30-Year-Old High School Basketball Star Arrested For Attending As a Teen

Faculty members thought the student was 17-years-old

Jonathan Nicola is a 6-foot-9, 17-year-old basketball star on the team at Catholic Central High School in Windsor, Ontario.

Weighing 200 pounds and wearing size 16 shoes, Nicola was the champion of his basketball team. Well, he was until Canadian authorities realized discovered he is actually a 30-year-old pretending to be a teenager. Right now, his career in sports is looking a little uncertain.

According to The Windsor Star, Nicola was arrested this week by Canada Border Services Agency for violating Canada’s Immigration Refugee Protection Act. The Windsor Star also reports that Nicola had been staying with his basketball coach, Pete Cusumano, through a program that allows foreign students to participate in home stays. He had previously told the paper that he immigrated from South Sudan last November, just before he turned 17.

There are still many unanswered questions about this story. Windsor-Essex Catholic District School spokesman Stephen Fields told the Star,

“There’s not really a whole lot to say…Because of the fact this is a matter that’s still outstanding before the federal authorities, obviously we can’t really comment on it. Beyond that there’s not a whole lot to say.”
