Arcade Fire have a polarizing approach to dress codes for their shows dating back to 2013 when they asked fans to attend their arena shows in formal wear and/or costume. They later backpedaled and said it was “super not mandatory” after many fans voiced their displeasure at the request.
Well, it looks like they’re at it again, according to an email to ticket winners for their July 27 Everything Now release show set for Brooklyn’s Grand Prospect Hall.
The email, shared by Brooklyn Vegan, outlines rules for a phone-free viewing and a rather strict dress code.
PHONE-FREE VIEWING EXPERIENCE:
No cellphones, cameras or recording devices will be allowed at this show. Upon arrival, all phones and smart watches will be secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show. Guests maintain possession of their phones throughout the night, and if needed, may access their phones at designated Yondr unlocking stations in the lobby.
WHAT TO WEAR:
Our dress code is HIP & TRENDY as if you are going to a concert or night out with friends! The event is standing-room-only so please plan accordingly.
PLEASE DO NOT WEAR shorts, large logos, flip flops, tank tops, crop tops, baseball hats, solid white or red clothing. We reserve the right to deny entry to anyone dressed inappropriately.
WHAT TO EXPECT
6:30pm: 1iota Check-in Opens
7:45pm: 1iota Check-in Closes
8:30pm – 9:00pm: Everything Now Live
The whole all-caps HIP & TRENDY bit makes us want to believe this all part of the elaborate joking marketing campaign that’s followed us up to this Friday’s release of Everything Now. Of course, if fans become enraged online at the prospect of stuffing themselves into a packed venue without being able to wear what they want, the band can always backtrack and say it was a joke regardless.
Whatever the case, people are mad online.

So, would you respect the dress code or would you rock your best shorts and flip flops in an effort to get tossed from the show?
