There is such thing as too many cooks in the kitchen. Music for these guys is an independent process: they do it alone, and they do it well.
Tame Impala is a five-man band on stage and in their press photos, but all the music is written by Kevin Parker alone. He is also the one playing most of the instruments on the recordings.
The War on Drugs
The War on Drugs has had a rotating cast of members anchored by Adam Granduciel who writes all the material alone and records a good chunk of it by himself as well, bringing in the other members as needed. The reason he is pictured on the album cover of Lost in the Dream is because he says it was a solo record.
Passion Pit is a recording project Michael Ankelakos started when he was in college. He writes and records the albums by himself, but does credit his live band for their success. Their upcoming album Kindred is the first time he’s worked with other songwriters on Passion Pit songs.
Nine Inch Nails
Nine Inch Nails has a shopping list of former members because the band is Trent Reznor, who writes everything himself then hires musicians to play live with him on tour.
LCD Soundsystem is kind of cheating since they have other band members all over their albums but James Murphy plays the majority of the instruments on the recordings and also writes most of the music himself.
