Toronto Mayor John Tory declared August 10 as Tragically Hip day. The legendary band begins their farewell tour today in Toronto with the first of three shows at the ACC.
John Tory spoke fondly of the group this morning, “This band, The Hip, have touched so many people. They haven’t been as famous internationally as other Canadian acts have been but I don’t think they focused on that. They told Canadian stories in a Canadian way. Their songs were rich with all kinds of references to our country and to small towns and Canadian things.”
The Hip’s ‘Man Machine Poem’ tour began earlier this year after Gord Downie announced that he’d been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Hailing from Kingston, Ontario, the band leave behind over a dozen albums from their impressive 30+ year music career. They play the ACC tonight, August 12 and August 14.
