David Gilmour Returns to Pompeii For Career-Spanning Set

In 1971 Pink Floyd landed in Pompeii to film a live performance of songs from their album from that year Meddle . While no one other than their director saw them perform, the footage of that concert became the primary source for their film Live in Pompeii. Fourty five years later, David Gilmour returned to the Pompeii stage to perform there once again. This time in front of an actual live audience.

Thursday night, Gilmour treated fans to a setlist dedicated to that era of Pink Floyd, including “One of These Days” and “The Great Gig in the Sky.” Rolling Stone reports that it also marked the first ever rock show to ever take place in that space. It was a large spectacle with the use of pyrotechnics, lights and a massive screen. The audience which was only a few thousand people stood right where the gladiators had once stood.
