Watch: The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer (Collective Arts Black Box Session)

Harmonica and guitar duo The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer bring the blues to the Black Box.

Shawn Hall (the Harpoonist) and Matthew Rogers (the Axe Murderer) met and bonded over music while working on radio jingles. Their shared love of blues artists like Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton, and Son House inspired them to form a band together, with Kris Kristofferson’s lyrics to “Bobby McGee” providing inspiration for their name (“I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana”).

Their raw and primal sound definitely displays their classic influences, but their sound is uniquely theirs. The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer stopped by Indie88 to perform a pair of songs in a Collective Arts Black Box Session.
