HEAR ME OUT: Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk”

As Bruno would say: "Don't believe me, just watch"

Welcome to hear me out, a column where I select a popular song and try to convince you of its merits. Maybe it’s overplayed, maybe it’s powerfully “uncool” or maybe it’s a guilty pleasure. In any case I’ll try to explain to you why it’s worth your time.

Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars – “Uptown Funk”

Uptown Funk is the biggest song in the world right now. I traveled internationally twice last month to two radically different places (the UK and Southern US) and the one thing that united them both was this song. It’s inescapable and for good reason. Not only is the song impossibly catchy with top notch production it’s also nostalgic and most importantly for a pop song; it’s fun.

You may be hearing Mark Ronson for the first time but make no mistake, he’s no one hit wonder. He’s quickly becoming one of the most relevant pop producers of our time. He can churn out Morris Day and The Time-inspired funk tracks like “Uptown Funk” and then within a few weeks be contributing beats to Action Bronson’s new record Mr. Wonderful. He’s also produced massive hits for acts as diverse as Amy Winehouse and Adele and worked with everyone from Ghostface Killah to Jack White. Name a current pop producer with a resume as varied.

This isn’t high-art, it’s a song where you turn off your brain and let your ass be your guide. You can watch this scenario unfolding every night, all around the world anytime a smart DJ drops Uptown Funk into his or her set at peak party.
