Help Us Honour Gord Downie With The Order of Canada

Only a handful of signatures away

A couple of months ago we set out a petition to ask Governor General David Johnston to admit the Tragically Hip’s frontman Gord Downie into the Order of Canada, and today we’re almost at our goal.

So far, of the 75,000 signatures we set out to achieve, we’re about 600 short; so we need your help!

Gord Downie has been praised his outstanding artistic contributions to Canadian halls of music over the years, as well his environmental and human rights activism.

Heavily involved Lake Ontario Waterkeeper advocacy group, Downie has been outspoken about issues surrounding water rights in Canada. He’s also long-recognized the under-representation of indigenous peoples in art and Canadian culture. At The Tragically Hip’s final show, Downie used his platform to call Justin Trudeau to action to pay attention to the bevy of socio-political problems many of our Indigenous people face on a day-to-day basis.

Citizens awarded with the Order of Canada, our nations highest national order meet this standard:

Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System, and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

We’d say that Downie goes above and beyond that order. If you agree, help us and sign the petition here, as well join the Facebook group here.
