IKEA advises Toronto teens against attempting sleepovers in stores

IKEA is not Swedish for sleepover.

We’ve all been there…it’s near impossible to not flop down on a bed for a little rest when strolling through a busy IKEA store. Just don’t get any ideas about planting yourself in one of those BRIMNES, BRUSALI, or MALM mattresses overnight.

There have been at least 10 cases of IKEA customers attempting to sleepover in stores in around the world in the past year, according to an Associated Press story. It’s a burgeoning craze that’s seemingly stemmed from two Belgian teens’ overnight adventures in a store.

Now, IKEA Canada is warning anyone who is thinking of hiding in a closet with hopes of spending the night in a store that they’re committing trespassing.

“We appreciate that people are interested in IKEA and want to create fun experiences,” IKEA Canada spokesperson Stephanie Harnett said in an email to Metro. “However the safety and security of our co-workers and customers is our highest priority which is why we do not allow sleepovers in our stores.”

Harnett said attempts at crashing overnight have been made in the Greater Toronto Area.

So uh, yeah…find something else to do with your evening, Toronto teens.
