Indie88 has officially cranked up the power, and to celebrate we called on Stars and July Talk to help host our Indie88 Power Party last night. Tickets were only $8.81 and sold out in less than an hour. The final four tickets were auctioned off on-air for $2000 to a very generous bidder, raising the total over $3500 for SKETCH Working Arts.
Hundreds packed into Toronto’s beloved Lee’s Palace on Saturday night for the sold out event featuring Canadian supergroup Stars, who stepped out of the studio for this one-off show, as well as emerging Toronto darlings July Talk.
As listeners piled into the venue, the anticipation was high. July Talk’s front duo, Peter Dreimanis and Leah Fay, seduced the crowd with unbeatable chemistry that can only be compared to Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. It was hard to look away as the band played through most of their catalogue, including favourites “Paper Girl”, “Guns + Ammunition”, and “The Garden”. Those in attendance not already familiar with the band surely left as fans.
Around 11:30pm, Stars took the stage opening with the very fitting “The Night Starts Here”. The entire room could feel the love from Torq Campbell and Amy Millan as they ran through hits from their decade plus discography, sneaking in a quick cover of Kevin Drew’s new single “Good Sex”.
It was a truly magical night and we want to thank everyone who came out and helped make it happen. A big shout out to our friendly overlords at the CRTC for boosting the power!
