This Vancouver-based We Are The City do things a bit differently. While the recording process is usually a closed door operation, this trio took the writing of their new album to a new level, literally. They live streamed the process starting mid October, 24 hours a day in a small studio above a club; hence the name Above Club.
Moving away from their garage rock High School EP, into the art rock progression of their Violent LP from earlier this year, Cayne Mackenzie, Andrew Huculiak and David Menzel have begun to carve out a new identity. The LP’s single “Keep On Dancing”, recorded previous to the live stream writing sessions, is a booming, tribal inspired anthem.
Using erratic synths, choppy drums with passionate and falsetto peaking vocals, tracks like “Heavy As A Brick” and “Kiss Me, Honey” meet somewhere between Toronto-natives The Darcys and indie prog masters Mew. While the band only wrapped the recording sessions on October 29th, their entire new LP is already available for your listening pleasure in the player below.
