Indie88 Video Premiere: Peter Katz releases “We Are The Reckoning”

Earthy, ethereal beauty from the eponymous LP 'We Are The Reckoning'

Life gets busy. Working full time, studying in school, or taking care of children; sometimes it’s really, really hard to step back and take a deep breath. I’ll admit: on this bitter cold morning, dreary from transit delays, I was caught up in the hump-day blues. But after watching Peter Katz’s “We Are The Reckoning” music video, my morning had a bit of a turnaround.

You could toss around the fact that Toronto-native Peter Katz is a Juno-nominated, CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award winning contemporary folk artist, but that probably wouldn’t impress you half as much as the sound that he produces. Slow, simple vocal melodies lie overtop haunting piano in his single “We Are The Reckoning”. It’s no surprise that this latest track is the product of collaboration between Katz himself, Royal Wood and Bill Lefler (Ingrid Michaelson, Cary Brothers).

In the video, Katz brings youthful optimism back, exposing the underlying good of people. Using a combination of footage of earth from different perspectives, inspirational leaders, political figures, and home videos, Katz hints at the idea that we’re all connected. Directed by Justin Broadbent, “We Are The Reckoning” is a breathtaking work of aural and visual art that is sure to send shivers down your spine.

“I am defiantly convinced that we are good. That love drives us, that we can change, that we can do great things that we didn’t know we could do. That it’s ok to be clumsy, get discouraged, make mistakes, while remembering that it’s worth it, that hope can point us towards a better world.”

The single comes from his album by the same name We Are The Reckoning, which is out now via Maple Music.

We are the meant to be, the sum of all that we’ve tried
A tattered history but one with nothing to hide
And our reality, stubbornly, will not be denied

We are the enemies of the empty passing of time
And all the energy that stays locked up inside
We are the reckoning, reminding what it means to be alive

Tell me what you seek out
We’ll fumble in the dark and find it
And clumsily now
We’ll get to where we get
And through our broken steps, we’ll make it

We are the broken ones, we’ll take the stones that they throw
And build a monument, so everybody will know
We cannot be undone, we will become, the lights along the road

Tell me what you seek out
We’ll fumble in the dark and find it
And clumsily now
We’ll get to where we get
And through our broken steps, we’ll make it

We will make it

We are the reckoning reminding what it means to be alive
We are the meant to be, the sum of all that we have ever tried
We are the reckoning reminding what it means to be alive

Tell me what you seek out
We’ll fumble in the dark and find it
And clumsily now
We’ll get to where we get
And through our broken steps, we’ll make it
We will make it
