Kathleen Wynne announces 8% HST cut from hydro bills in throne speech

Saving the average household $130 a year.

Good news for Ontario Energy consumers. Remember this $100 Hydro bill for absolutely zero usage? Well, Kathleen Wynne did, and today she did something about it.

The Premier’s government has officially announced that electricity ratepayers will no longer be charged the 8% provincial portion of the harmonized sales tax on their hydro bill, starting January 2017.

Eliminating the 8% provincial share of the 13% HST will save the average household $130 a year. In the Goverment’s throne speech, which was read in the Legislature by Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell, it was stated,

“Whether in Kenora, Sudbury, Belleville, London, or Barrie, your government has listened to and has heard your concerns.”

“It recognizes that the cost of electricity is now stretching family budgets.”
