Another reminder of Bowie’s remarkable legacy surfaced this morning.
While recording the theme song to the British Rock Musical Absolute Beginners in ’85, Bowie had some downtime to unload some creative steam. Using the backing track from the song, Bowie busted out an impressive number of musical impersonations including Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Tom Waits, and Anthony Newley.
Between the takes at Westside Studios you can hear Bowie cracking jokes and making quips with the producer Mark Saunders, who seem to be having a great time. It’s a pretty telling insight into the kind of person Bowie was: funny, compassionate and over-the-top talented.
