For years and years now there has been a plethora of sexual tension between Mr. Burns and his right hand man Mr. Smithers. In most episodes that the two appear in, there’s usually a Smithers fantasy sequence or some kind ofline insinuating that he’s infatuated with Montgomery Burns in a “more than a friend” kind of way.
For awhile now, producers of the show described Weiland Smithers as “Burns-Sexual” instead of Homosexual, but this season it looks like Smithers will finally open up to his boss about his feelings towards men.
“In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t,” executive producer Al Jean said in a recent interview. “We deal with that in two episodes, we actually do a lot with Smithers this year. He gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”
