It was just another day in school for Lynelle Cantwell who attends Holy Trinity Regional High School in the Newfoundland and Labrador town of Torbay. Some of her classmates were talking about some polls that other students had set up on the website ask.fm. There was one for the prettiest girl in grade 12 and one for the ugliest. When one of her classmates informed her that she was on the latter list, her heart sunk.
“It hurt. A lot. I’m not going to lie. It kind of tore me up inside a little bit. I was like, ‘Oh, my God, like why would somebody be so mean as to post stuff like this?”, she said in an interview.
After remembering some advice from a teacher about not writing anything when you are angry, she waited to collect her thoughts and feelings on how the cyber bullying made her feel. When she became comfortable about her message, she posted it on Facebook. Her message shows that Lynelle is a strong young woman with enough confidence to reject what her bullies aimed to do: diminish her. In doing so, she set an example for other victims of this cowardice behaviour to follow.
