Raina’s Spring Melt Playlist

Melt away those winter blues

Spring is imminent! The days of freezing winds and gloomy skies are soon to pass, welcoming the sight of blooming flowers and open patios. While you watch the snow melt and the dark skies fade, listen to my Spring Melt playlist and feel the warmth!

PAS/CAL – “Summer Is Almost Here”

Ahhh, summer! Time for short shorts and crop tops – unless you’re a prude… like the guy in this song. But truly: a wavy, sunshiny, slightly melancholy track. The kinda thing you might listen to while laying on the beach and love and then forget you ever heard it. The perfect party background song – and, duh, “Summer Is Almost Here” – it’s spring!

ST. LUCIA – “DANCING ON GLASS”

There’s nothing quite like cheesy 80s synths to make you feel like everything might actually be alright. The sun’s out! Stop being sad, get up and dance!

THE PREATURES – “Is This How You Feel?”

You know when you get carried away by a warm night… and you wake up with the right person? Maybe not the right FOREVER person – but you wake up and you don’t feel so bad. You’re in this one together? This is the song you listen to on the way home from their house while you still feel like you’re in love.

BECK – “MORNING”

… sorry, I’m back! Just took a second to light some incense and gaze calmly out the window, perfectly at peace. That’s just how chill and positive this song makes me feel. (Feeling will be 4x as strong during spring months)

MASON JENNINGS – “DARKNESS BETWEEN THE FIREFLIES”

Have that perfect movie moment where you spread the curtains on a bright summer day, illuminating the steam coming from the coffee cup in your hand. You start to tidy up, light a candle and put on this record. Everything is beautiful.

THE ZOLAS – “SWOONER”

Oh crap. You know about Spring Fever, right? When you fall in love a lot? I don’t want to alarm you, but that’s about to happen. Don’t just give in! No matter how much your knees want to go weak and you wanna just hold their hand for a second and wow isn’t their hair pretty– NO! YOU’RE SWOONING!

Electric Light Orchestra – “MR. BLUE SKY”

Not to be too obvious but in the spring? The sky is blue! And the sun is shining in the sky! There ain’t a cloud in sight! It’s stopped raining and – you know what? JUST GO ENJOY IT.

BORN RUFFIANS – “HUMMINGBIRD”

The thing about spring is that everything feels like it’s opening up. Like a tulip. The thing about spring is that you feel like you live in a tulip. And this sounds like a tulip the way it opens up. A tulip that’s being sipped on. This song is about opening up like a tulip to be sipped on by a hummingbird. By a hummingbird. This is “Hummingbird”.

THE SHINS – “AUSTRALIA”

Have you heard the phrase: “multiplying like bunnies”? It’s springtime. Do the math.

EELS – “PEACH BLOSSOM”

“Wonderful, Glorious” is how you feel when you “open the window and smell the peach blossom, the tiger lily, the marigolds”! It’s also the name of the album this song is from. Open your windows!

GRIMES – “CALIFORNIA”

This song sounds exactly the way an orange tastes.

PURITY RING – “FINESHRINE”

Have you ever seen a new crocus? There’s something so fragile and delicate about the way they hold their petals that it’s almost scary to touch them. But even while they seem fragile, they’re the only flowers hearty enough to break through the cold early spring soil and grow. That willowy but hardy blooming? That’s what this song is like.

BORNS – “ELECTRIC LOVE”

Is there something inherently wrong about happy music? Why is it so hard to write? Why is it so hard to make sound authentic? Borns makes happy music that feels genuine. It’s music so happy the first time you hear it… you might get chills. The GOOD kind of chills!

PASSION PIT – “CARRIED AWAY”

You know when you finally get to go outside without a jacket after months of winter? It’s like you’re freer. You ARE technically freer, without wearing the jacket – but it’s as if that jacket were made of worries, fears and 5-lbs weights – once it’s off… you’re suddenly a cloud who can get blown away in the slightest breeze.

IRON & WINE – “NAKED AS WE CAME”

It’s like you’re laying in a meadow!

THE TEMPTATIONS – “MY GIRL”

As soon as you hear “I’ve Got Sunshine On a Cloudy Day,” you know you’re in for a mood boosting hit.

DR. DOG – “THE RABBIT, THE BAT & THE REINDEER”

About 8 years ago I had nowhere to live, so my friends Dan, Drew and Booker let me live in their apartment for free. I had nothing but my crappy laptop and a bag of clothes. I’d forgotten all my CDs (which were still a thing) except this one, and I listened to it for two straight months as the weather warmed up. .

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE – “MY GIRLS”

When you go down South, a lot of people don’t have windows. Have you ever been to San Diego? None of the bars have windows! The one time I was there, it rained – and people were LOSING THEIR MINDS. The venue Hollerado was supposed to play at only had an OUTDOOR backstage that had never been rained out before. The band tuned up in the van. Anyway, all this guy wants is “adobe slats” for his girls which seems adequate in hotter climates unless there’s precipitation.

LEON BRIDGES – “FLOWERS”

The problem with the winter is that it’s easy to start believing that death is stalking you. Days are short, dark comes early, you forget the carefree breeze of summer is even possible. Sometimes if you just put on a song about flowers it’s like, “Oh, right, everything is going to be fine.”

THE BIG PINK – “CRYSTAL VISIONS”

I’ve always thought there was something oddly melancholy about spring. Like, yes, life is returning but it’s not QUITE the same as when it last left. If you need a song to remind you that starting and building back up is both scary and beautiful – this is it.

SUFJAN STEVENS – “CHICAGO”

There is no prettier song on Earth than this. It’s the prettiest one! You can’t beat it! It might as well come wrapped in a doily!

LAND OF TALK – “SOME ARE LAKES”

This song feels like the memory of some long ago spring.

THE MOST SERENE REPUBLIC – “ONTARIO MORNING”

Sunrises! Dew! Birds singing! Ontario Morning!

KURT VILE – “WAKIN ON A PRETTY DAY”

This song at the end of the playlist because it’s 9 minutes long and it’s a perfect way to play yourself the credits.
