Kirk Weddle’s photo of the baby in the pool featured on Nirvana’s seminal Nevermind album is one of the most iconic and recognizable album covers of all time. Later on, after the album had become a massive success, a photoshoot took place with Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic at a Los Angeles pool for an underwater photo shoot based on the iconic album cover.
The session took place on an unexpectedly cold early morning at a swimming pool in Los Angeles, and Weddle recalls Kurt exclaiming “Fuck! I have to get in the pool?” upon learning that the shoot would be taking place underwater.
But Weddle managed to get them all on board with his idea, and he captured around 200 photos of the band. The photos had been kept “stacked in a closet, unorganized”, according to Weddle, and none of them had been released publicly (with the exception of some appearing in the recently released Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck) until now.
