Things You Need To Know Today: April 8, 2016

Today's New Highlights!

Get your quick news fix with “5 Things You Need to Know Today,” a daily feature that I’ll be posting on Indie88.com after The Morning After. We’ll keep you up to date on the latest local and international stories buzzing today.

1. JAYS HOME OPENER

It’s an exciting weekend for Jays fans. Marcus Stroman will get the start at the home opener tonight against the Red Sox. It’s the first season with a dirt infield at the Rogers Centre. Until now, turf slowed the ball down when it hit the field. The first pitch is at 7:07pm.

2. WEEKEND SUBWAY CLOSURE

Line 2 from Christie to Jane is closed tomorrow and Sunday. Shuttle buses will be running on Bloor.

3. UBER VS. TAXI

The city announced new rules for Taxi’s and Uber yesterday to level the playing field. While taxi’s will get a bit of a break…Ubers will face with new licensing fees. Uber drivers will also have to get better insurance to cover themselves and their passengers.

4. INSTRUMENTS AT THE LIBRARY

The Toronto Public Library is the best! They just started lending out musical instruments from the Parkdale branch. As a kid who grew up with a single mom on unemployment…music was not something we could afford. This is a great initiative that will benefit everyone. Guitars, ukuleles and banjos are just a few of the instruments you can get with your library card.

5. AMERICAN IDOL

American Idol is finally over! Last night the reality singing competition crowned it’s 15th and last winner ever, Trent Harmon. Remember when American Idol reject William Hung sang this gem at a Toronto Blue Jays game in 2004?
