Underrated Bestival Best Bets

Don't-miss these 6 acts this weekend

MattThe Morning After with Brian, Matt & Candice (Weekdays 6am-10am)

Matt Hart is most known for his musical work under the name The Russian Futurists. Recently, Matt has shifted focus to broadcasting with host duties at CBC Radio and now at Indie88.

It’s officially festival season and it’s easy to get lost trying to wade through the sea of bands visiting the city. This weekend UK festival Bestival hits Toronto island for the first time and with it comes another wave of bands that you might not know. Here are some of my favorite picks that might not be on your radar yet.

Snotty, bratty, stoned power pop is what Wavves is all about. These guys will whip the crowd into a frenzy, guaranteed.

Dan Snaith is a national treasure. He’s been nominated for, and won the Polaris Prize and Juno here in Canada and is massive internationally. His band Caribou plays Saturday night and his side project Daphni will be spinning records in the afternoon.

Jamie XX

His band the xx are big in Europe but don’t have a massive following here yet. He’s a great producer and remix artist that deals in subdued electronic. Catch him on Friday night.

Do you enjoy getting “turnt”? If you answered yes then you should check out trap producers Flosstradamus. If you’re looking for big dirty bass, be there Friday for this set.

Owen Pallett

As Final Fantasy, Owen won the first ever Polaris Prize. Since then he has gone from Toronto underground sensation to Arcade Fire violinist to one of the most sought after string arrangers in pop music. He’s a brilliant artist and not one to miss on Saturday.
