Released just last week, Future Politics is Austra’s third album. Inspired by books like Inventing The Future: Post Capitalism in a World Without Work and The Accelerationist Manifesto, it’s clear that frontwoman Katie Stelmanis is thinking a lot about what the future holds for all of us.
“Two years ago,” Stelmanis explained on Facebook, “I started writing Future Politics in response to what I saw as a fast approaching dystopia. I meant it as a call to imagine something different, a better future.”
In an ironic twist of fate, the record would be released the same day that Donald Trump was inaugurated.
“This record is our commitment to envisioning something different as humans, something outside of the current systems of say what you want, take what you want, and give nothing back.”
And to prove they aren’t all talk, they donated the proceeds of record sales on inauguration day to Planned Parenthood. “I still have radical hope for the future,” Stelmanis wrties, “and I would be honored for Future Politics to be a part of your soundtrack to creating change.”
Watch Katie perform two songs from the new record on piano, live at Indie88 in the Collective Arts Black Box.
