Just prior to their performance at The Opera House in Toronto on Nov. 17, Matt Berninger and Brent Knopf of EL VY sat down with Indie88’s Matt Hart in the dark underbelly of the venue to chat about the new project between the two longtime friends. They talked about what led to the decision to finally record music together after many years of sharing ideas, and how the experience differed so much from their other bands.
Berninger also went on to talk about how becoming a husband and a father affected his songwriting, and clarified that he’s not the sad guy everyone seems to think he is.
“I’ve had phases of being depressed and dark, but writing music and songs that go to those sort of emotional shadows of your gut, is always something I’ve found to be uplifting and strangely joyful… I’ve been a happy person ever since the beginning of The National, and I think people have this impression that I’m this dark, depressed dude. It’s not the case at all.“
