We’re 30 Seconds Closer to Doomsday

It's two-and-a-half minutes to midnight

It’s been 2017 for just a few weeks and we’re already 30 seconds closer to the apocalypse.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BPA) have moved the minute hand on the Doomsday Clock from three minutes to two-and-a-half minutes to midnight, AKA a global catastrophe.

What is the Doomsday Clock you ask? Marking its 70th anniversary this year, the clock is a symbolic metric that estimates how close the planet is to an apocalypse, based on issues surrounding nuclear weapons, disputes between countries, and the environment.

Scientists list a number of reasons for their decision to move the hand, some include the tension between the U.S and Russia, North Korea’s underground nuclear tests, global warming, and the cherry on top: The election of Donald Trump.

In their report it states that Donald Trumps comments on “the use and proliferation of nuclear weapons and expressed disbelief in the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change” was a big concern and contributed to the hand being moved.

So what can we do? Scientists say public officials need to take immediate action surrounding the world issues we currently face, as ask that citizens step forward to put pressure on, and express themselves to demand change.
