What You Need To Know About the Proposed Transgender Bill C-16

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal party take another progressive step in the right direction with the new transgender rights bill.

On Tuesday, the Liberals proposed Bill C-16 which aims to provide legal and human rights protection to Canada’s trans community.

Bill C-16 will update the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code so that it contains the terms gender identity and gender expression, making it illegal to discriminate anyone on the basis of gender identity and expression. Criminal laws will define any such discrimination as a hate crime.

Currently, Canada has the Human Rights Act, protecting people from sexual orientation discrimination. We are also one of the first countries to pass the Civil Marriage Act which recognizes same sex marriage.

“It’s time to take the ‘T’ in LGBT more seriously,” Mathieu Chantelois, executive director of Pride Toronto, told Metro News. “This bill marks a date we need to remember when Canada and Toronto stood on the right side of history. I’m glad Pride could be a part of it.”
