Will Butler Teams Up With The Guardian

Lets hope next week's headliners bring the dramatic flair

Will Butler has set out to do the impossible: everyday for the week of February 23rd, he’ll write a song chronicling a headline from that day’s issue of The Guardian. The tracks will be posted on their website, prior to the release of Butler’s debut solo album, Policy, on March 10th.

Butler seems to have high hopes for the project. “It was partly inspired by Bob Dylan, who used to announce that certain songs were based on headlines. It would be a song he wrote in two weeks or something, such as ‘The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll’, which is one of the greatest songs ever. So I’ve set myself an impossible bar,” he said.

We wish Will Butler the best of luck and hope the week delivers some juicy headlines-we’re looking at you Jack White. Here’s how Will’s been doing so far:

Monday Feb 24th:
Inspired somehow by the Greek debt crisis, this electro-pop, Talking Heads-sounding track is the first post for the week, called “Clean Monday”.

Tuesday Feb 25th:
Inspired by two stories, “Waving Flag” is written about a) repatriating an anti-aparthied activist’s remains from Russia to South Africa, and b) backwards-looking Ukraine Separatists. Heavy stuff.

Wednesday Feb 26th:
“You Must Be Kidding” follows the current water rationing issues plaguing the people of São Paulo, Brazil. For some of the regions residents, clean water was turned off for nearly four days.
