Here are 10 songs for bitter, jaded, single people on Valentine’s Day whose mom won’t stop asking them why they don’t have a boyfriend/girlfriend. May these make you feel better about your situation and maybe entice you to go out and have some single fun.
LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends
I am not 100 percent sure, but I THINK this is about looking back fondly on, and cherishing the fun, crazy times you had with lyrics like “I wouldn’t trade one stupid decision for another five years of lies”, and “You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan, and the next five years trying to be with your friends again”.
Violent Femmes – Blister in the Sun
This song is about not needing someone else to love yourself…in a very literal way.
MGMT – Time to Pretend
This is not autobiographical for MGMT but it’s a song about being young and just having fun.
Stars – Your Ex-Lover is Dead
Seems like a touching love song until Torquil sings “All of that time you thought I was sad, I was trying to remember your name”. It ends with both voices acknowledging that they had what seems like a pretty good relationship that just didn’t work out and it’s time to move on. I realize there are probably some deeper themes.
Iggy Pop – Lust For Life
All about Iggy Pop’s hard lifestyle and drug problem. I am not suggesting you do any sort of illicit drug but single people are supposed to like going out and partying so maybe this song will make you feel like you want to do that.
The Killers – Somebody Told Me
About a young man frustrated with striking out at the club, since you’re obviously good at that, it seems fitting.
Sloan – If It Feels Good Do It
The title is pretty self explanatory
Joel Plaskett – Nowhere With You
I’m pretty sure this is about a meaningful one night relationship. Maybe your Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to end without a little romance.
Crystal Castles – Not in Love
This makes it pretty clear that someone is not in love.
And finally Alabama Shakes – Hold On
A song about being in a bad place in your life and not meeting your potential but still holding on because it gets better. So of course this has no business being on this list because you’re single by choice and your life is perfect.
