10 Great Bands With GRL PWR

Check Out The Bands With Frontwomen Who Rock

Whether she’s on the drums, guitar, bass or mic, it’s truly awesome to see powerful women rock the stage and show us what they’re made of. Check out our list of bands and a few solo artists who exude GRL PWR.

Alabama Shakes

This blues rock band was formed in Athens, Alabama in 2009. If you’ve listened to the band before, which you most definitely have, you know that frontwoman Brittany Howard has killer vocals and plays an insane guitar, with sound, energy and soul that will send chills down your spine.

Cherry Glazerr

Cherry Glazerr is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles. Lead singer and guitarist Clementine Creevy used to rock out in her bedroom as a teenager, now she’s rocking out harder than ever on stage. Check out the bands full album, Apocalipsticks and you may just find yourself belting out bad ass lyrics in the mirror, with a hair brush in hand for a mic.

Kinley (from Hey Rosetta!)

Warning: Video includes content regarding sexual assault which may be triggering for some viewers.

Kinley Dowling, originally a member of the Canadian indie rock band (formed in St. John’s, New Foundland & Labrador) Hey Rosetta! has continued with her career as a solo artist under the name KINLEY. Dowling exudes strength with the release of her debut album Letters Never Sent in which she confronts the rape she endured in adolescence.

Her music video for “Microphone” includes discussion regarding her experience. She truly provides as a perfect example. Speaking up against her assaulter and fighting for justice, you’ll want to sing her empowering tune and stand alongside her – now that’s what I call GRL PWR.

Kali Uchis

Kali Uchis is a Columbian-American solo artist who you may have noticed syncing vocals in collaboration with Daniel Caesar. Now she’s singing her own song, preaching “If you need a hero, just look in the mirror” in collaboration with Tyler the Creator. This tune is a vibe and Uchis’ smooth vocals will melt you into the ground.

The Beaches

Our beloved all-girl Toronto band The Beaches rocks the stage with singer and bassist Jordan Miller, guitarist Kylie Miller, guitarist/keyboardist Leandra Earl and drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel. You just can’t sit still when their tunes come on, especially from their debut album, The Late Show. Fun fact! Emily Haines of Metric helped produce the album.

Alpine

This Australian indie-pop band is a total gem. Formed in Melbourne, Victoria in 2009, the group was named as a “Band to Watch” by Rolling Stone in July 2013. Airy vocals courtesy of Phoebe Baker and Lou James.

FKA Twigs

Born in Cheltenham, UK Tahliah Debrett Barnett (FKA Twigs) started out as a backup dancer in South London at 17. Her music serves as a unique avant-pop. FKA twigs hypnotizes her audience with haunting vocals and fluid movement.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour has a sound that sends you back in time yet pulls you into the future. The little indie band began in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2007 and has tunes that’ll stay stuck in your head for weeks. Frontwoman Mette Lindberg is the source of spunk with her sassy yet sweet vocals.

Haim

This all-girl, indie rock band includes sisters Este Haim, Danielle Haim and Alana Haim. The girls originate from San Fernando Valley, California and combine to create a sound full of sweet harmonies and dreamy tunes.

Metric

Toronto’s alt rock band always puts on an epic show, especially with Emily Haines being the leading lady. Formed in 1998, Haines vocals exude power, confidence and rock n’ roll.
