Sex Education

Netflix | Out Now

This TV show is as heart-warming as it is funny. Following high schoolers in rural UK trying to navigate sex and relationships, the main character Otis, played by Asa Butterfield, is a socially awkward, disgruntled teenager living with his sex therapist mother (Gillian Anderson). Using pastel fashion, soft cinematography and quirky characters, Sex Education is relatable in the way it tackles teen issues.

Netflix | Out Now

Based on the 1980s women’s professional wrestling unit, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, GLOW is a badass, spandex-clad comedy-drama. Alison Brie spearheads the show as Ruth “Zoya the Destroya” Wilder, an eclectic and honest character. The later seasons stray away from the wrestling to focus on political issues, but the show keeps its outrageous and bold energy.

Based on Issa Rae’s web series Awkward Black Girl, the show explores social issues related to the Black female experience as the two main characters Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji) navigate careers and relationships. A hilarious and important T.V. show, the long-awaited season 4 is out this April.

Bojack Horseman

Netflix | Season 6 Premiered January 31st

This adult animated show premiered its final season Friday, after six years of dark, yet humorous takes on the human experience through personified animals. The show has come a long way since it first premiered in 2014, but it still hits in its satirical portrayal of serious issues.

CBC Gem | Out Now

This Canadian sketch comedy series aired just last September, after the four-member Toronto sketch troupe TallBoyz II Men was picked up by CBC for their own show. The troupe explores topics like race, friendship and toxic masculinity within their sketches, making for an equally gut-busting and insightful show.

Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj

Netflix | Out Now

Amidst a sea of political satire talk shows, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj stands out against the crowd with Minhaj’s clever topical commentary, entertaining personal stories and the versatile use of the stage and the screens around him. Volume 5 finished just this past December, but fans are already looking forward to Volume 6.

Black Monday

Showtime | Season 2 Premiers March 15

This dark comedy offers a fresh take on “Black Monday,” the day when international stock markets crashed in 1987. Starring Don Cheadle and executive produced by Seth Rogen amongst others, the show follows who and what caused the crash. Embodying all the chaos of the ’80s, parties, personalities and fashion included, this show takes a historic event and make an effective parody of it.

Russian Doll

Netflix | Out Now

Despite airing only eight episodes last February, Russian Doll was elevated to mainstream popularity, many thanks to the eccentric and quick-witted Natasha Lyonne, playing Diana Vulukov. Repeatedly waking up on her 36th birthday, Diana tries to figure out what keeps her stuck in this time-loop. Although season 2 has been confirmed, there’s no word on a release date. Nonetheless, this series is definitely one to check out.

Netflix | Season 3 Premieres March 27th

Starring Jason Bateman as Marty Byrde, this show follows the Byrde family as they relocate to the Ozarks, a small summer resort community in Missouri. Marty thinks he’s found a perfect spot as a money laundering operation for his involvement with the Mexican cartel, but soon finds out that two local families are even bigger criminals than he is. Ominous and filled with plot twists, Ozark is back with a new season this March.

The Haunting of Hill House

Netflix | Out Now

If you’re a horror fan, then this is the show for you. The show follows a family of five siblings as they’re haunted by paranormal activities in Hill House. While extremely scary, this psychological thriller has a complex and engaging plot that offers a fresh take on ghosts and haunted houses. As an anthology, the second season will have a different plot and characters, but if it’s anything like the first season, it’ll definitely be a terrifying must-see.
