10 Songs from Outer Space

Check out these 10 tracks that are out of this world

Outer space is the void that exists between celestial bodies. These 10 songs all reference or take place outside earth’s atmosphere.

Daft Punk – Contact

The only words in this song are a recording from the Apollo 17 mission, where commander Gene Cernan talks about seeing something rotating in space. It was likely part of the rocket that was discarded when they made it out of earth’s atmosphere, but it’s still eerie to think about.

Broken Bells – Holding on for Life

This song’s simplest interpretation is that it’s about someone who is very lonely. But the music video is shot on another planet, and it features the Theremin – which has an alien-like sound.

Florence and the Machine – Cosmic Love

Florence Welch uses the word “cosmic” as a metaphor and theme throughout the song for how immense their love is for each other.

Beastie Boys – Intergalactic

Beastie Boys namecheck Uranus, Spock, other dimensions, and new galaxies all in this song.

David Bowie – Space Oddity

This is about a fictional astronaut named Major Tom as he is launched into space. It’s also one of the only songs in existence to be performed in space.

Radiohead – Subterranean Homesick Alien

Thom Yorke sings about aliens swooping down, abducting him, and showing him the world as he’d love to see it.

Kraftwerk – Computer Love

In 1981, Kraftwerk were singing about computer love and needing a “data date” – suggesting it takes place in some futuristic space-type computer age. Coldplay sampled this song on their 2005 song “Talk”.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Area 52

Yeah Yeah Yeahs use industrial sounds that almost resemble a spaceship in this song. Karen O sings, “I wanna be your passenger/Take me as your prisoner/I want to be an alien/take me please oh alien”.

Sufjan Stevens – Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois

This is off of Sufjan Stevens’ 2005 album Illinois, which features songs about people, places, or events related to the state of Illinois. This song is about a UFO sighting in Highland, Illinois, where a number of people saw a large triangular object with three lights flying at night.
