You Think You Know Spoon, But Do You Really?

If you’re reading this, I can tell you two things about yourself. One, you’re excited for the big Spoon show at Y&D square for NXNE and two, you can’t wait for the new Spoon record. Whether you’re a fan of Spoon already, or your just getting into them, this is the perfect place to get a few quick hits of all things Spoon.

1. They chose the name Spoon to honour the 1970s German band Can, who had a song called “Spoon”.

2. Before Spoon, singer Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno were in a country/grassroots band called Alien Beats.

3. In 2009 the review aggregator Metacritic ranked Spoon as its “Top overall artist of the decade”, based on the band’s consistently high review scores between 2000 and 2009.

4. Lead singer/guitarist Britt Daniel was one half of the writing and composing team for the Stranger Than Fiction soundtrack in 2006.

5. Britt learned about some of his biggest musical influences while working at a student-run radio station in Texas.

6. Spoon songs have appeared in a copious amount of TV shows and movies including How I Met Your Mother, I Love You Man, 500 Days of Summer, The Simpsons and many more.

7. Britt Daniel was the one to approach Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner to create the indie group Divine Fits.

8. Along with being a drummer, Jim Eno is also a producer and microchip designer.

9. In 1993 Spoon lost a battle of the bands to a group called Mr. Happy, and thus did not get the chance to play SXSW.

10. Spoon was used in the first promo that Indie88 ever made. *tear*
