5 Bands That Got Together Through The Classified Ads

Bet you didn't know these groups formed over Craigslist

Elton John and his song writing partner Bernie Taupin have a very unique way of writing songs: Bernie writes all the lyrics in one room and Elton John writes the music and melody in another. They have worked together for over 45 years and have never written in the same room. Their partnership started after they both answered an ad an A&R man placed in NME magazine. In honour of that, here are other bands that got together blindly after answering ads.

Half Moon Run

Dylan and Conner’s siblings were friends so when they both moved to Montreal they knew each other just well enough to start playing music together. They put an ad on Craigslist for a bassist or drummer who likes Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes and Radiohead. Devon Portielje answered the ad. He wasn’t a drummer or bassist, but they clicked and rearranged the band to include him as lead singer and guitarist.

Capital Cities

Sebu Simonian put an ad on Craigslist looking for production work and Ryan Merchant was the only person who replied. He said after checking out Sebu’s work he felt like they were kindred spirits. They ended up writing jingles for companies like Hallmark and Honda until Safe and Sound took off.

The Lumineers

Wesley Shultz and Jeremiah Fraites started a band and weren’t getting any traction in New York so they moved out to Denver. When they got there, they put an ad on Craigslist for a Cellist. Neyla Pekarek was the first to respond and she became a huge part of the successful band they are today.

The Killers

Dave Keuning put an ad in a Las Vegas newspaper looking for musicians who loved Oasis. Brandon Flowers responded and the first song they worked on together was Mr. Brightside.

Here’s the original demo before Mark Stoermer and Ronnie Vannucci were even part of the band.
