Matt Reeves wanted to make ‘the most emotional Batman movie ever’

Back in August, new footage of The Batman debuted as CinemaCon. The clips were cut with behind-the-scenes footage of Reeves and the cast talking about the film. In it, the director reveals he was partially inspired by Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One. “I felt that we’ve seen lots of origin stories,” Reeves said. “It seems things go further and further into fantasy, and I thought, well, one place we haven’t been is grounding it in the way that Year One does, to come right in to a young Batman, not being an origin tale, but referring to his origins and shaking him to his core. You can have it be very practical, but I also thought it could be the most emotional Batman movie ever made.”

‘The Batman’ will highlight Gotham’s history of corruption

At DC FanDome, Reeves confirmed that his version of The Batman will be a gritty noir take. The detective-style film set to revolve around a series of gruesome murders. As revealed in newspaper clippings in the trailer, the first murder victim is Mayor Don Mitchell Jr. Essentially, The Batman is set to tell the tale of Gotham’s history of corruption.

Robert Pattinson had to be drained of sweat while screen testing in Val Kilmer’s Batsuit

During the DC FanDome livestream, Twilight actor Pattinson and director Reeves revealed that he had a pretty “crazy” screen test for the flick. “Rob did his first [screen test] by himself and he literally was wearing, I believe, Val Kilmer’s Batsuit,” Reeves says. “Which, by the way, the moment [Pattinson put it on, that was kind of a crazy moment.” Pattinson then explained that his nerves and the latex suit made him super sweaty. “I remember we did like two takes and people were just saying, ‘What can we do about the sweat?’ They were like, ‘Nothing! Nothing that can be done.’ I had to be drained of liquid.”

Zoë Kravitz says the Catwoman role was ‘very physically demanding’

In an interview with AnOther, Kravitz descriped her role as Catwoman as “very physically demanding.” “I had to be in a very specific shape, and there’s a pandemic going on,” Kravitz explains. “I’m being zipped into a catsuit every day at 7am, working 12-hour days and then coming home and working out. It was intense.”

The release date was pushed back because Pattinson caught COVID-19

The Batman was originally set for release on October 1st, 2021. But, last September, the film’s star Robert Pattinson caught COVID-19. Alongside the industry’s slow return during the pandemic, this caused the film’s release to be pushed back to March 4th, 2022.
