A Porn Website Wants to Revive Netflix’s Sense8

"What we admire about the Wachowskis, and about the show itself is that it takes risks."

The cancellation of the cult-favourite Netflix series, Sense8, for being “not large enough to support the economics of something that big,” was a massive disappointment to fans everywhere. The Netflix original show, which had just concluded it’s second season, garnered a passionate fanbase who flooded Twitter with demands for its revival #BringBackSense8 and #RenewSense8. A “compromise” of sorts was reached when Netflix promised a two-hour finale to be released in 2018, until an unlikely hero showed up to save the day.

In an open letter to the shows creators, xHamster, a porn site, has offered to produce a third season of Sense8, complete with the promise of an audience and the required funds. “We’re huge admirers of the show, as are many of our fans. Obviously, for both us and the Wachowskis this would be a big move, and the logistics would need to be worked out.”

Alex Hawkins, Vice President of xHamster, acknowledges the obvious stigmatization of adult media in the mainstream, “Does it open up possibilities for the storyline if the show is moved away from a mainstream corporation and onto a platform that’s not sex-phobic? Does a mainstream audience feel comfortable moving to a platform known for adult?”

Yet it he sees it not as an obstacle, but an asset for both parties, “We know that a series about polymorphous perversity is a hard sell for a mainstream network like Netflix. We have no such limitations, and also understand implicitly the interconnectedness of sexualities across boundaries.”

Unfortunately for fans, Sense8 creator Lana Wachowski has already agreed to the 2-hour wrap up episode with Netflix, but mentioned that the offer was “intriguing.” Though they couldn’t save this show, xHamster seemed to have gotten it’s foot in the door, opening up a larger conversation about the representation of non-normative sexuality in the media.
