A sixth season of ‘Black Mirror’ is in the works

Black Mirror is returning for a sixth season, according to Variety.

A source reportedly revealed that a sixth season is in the works, and it’ll be more cinematic. Additionally, the new season of Black Mirror will be made up of more episodes than season 5.

The last season of the show aired back in 2019. Made up of three episodes, the season starred Miley Cyrus, Andrew Scott, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mahteen II, and Topher Grace.

Season six of Black Mirror may take on a pretty different direction, as it will be the first new season of the show since creator Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones left their production company House of Tomorrow in January of 2020.

Since then, Brooker and Jones started up their own company, Broke and Bones. Netflix has invested in Broke and Bones as part of a five year deal.

There’s been a pretty big gap in between seasons because Endemol Shine Group, which owns House of Tomorrow, continued to own the rights to Black Mirror. But, Netflix has reached a license deal that has allowed Brooker and Jones to move forward with a new season of the beloved series.

Back in May of 2020, the future of the show was in question. Brooker said that he believed the world is too dark right now for new episodes of the show with the spread of COVID-19.

“At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those,” Brooker explained to The Radio Times when asked about another season. “I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”
