Alt-J share gentle new acoustic song ‘Get Better’

Alt-J have shared their gentle new single, “Get Better.”

The soft new tune serves as the second single from their forthcoming album, The Dream, out February 11th. Drummer Thom Sonny Green doesn’t appear on this new track, as Alt-J take a softer approach. “Get Better” is “the union of two songs,” according to Joe Newman, who strums acoustic guitar. Gus Unger-Hamilton delivers harmonies and soft piano lines on the song. The track also comes accompanied by an animated video from Stefanie Grunwald.

“I felt nervous heat when writing ‘Get Better,'” Newman explains. “The context of the Coronavirues pandemic lent my words a chilling weight and gave me a new sense of responsibility as a lyricist. Whilst the direct events described are fictional, I believe – or I hope – that it’s emotionally the most honest song I’ve written.”

As mentioned earlier, “Get Better” is made up of two tracks. The first is an improvisation that Newman sang to his partner, Darcy Wallace, back in 2018. The second track is a chord progression that Newman wrote during lockdown, as he thought of the thousands of people that lost loved ones in the pandemic.

The new Alt-J record, The Dream, balances beauty and darkness. Both are “often seamlessly merging on the same track, a purposeful choice that pays dividends across the record.”

“Get Better” follows Alt-J’s previously released single, “U&ME.”
