Arcade Fire cover Harry Styles’ ‘As It Was’

Arcade Fire took to BBC’s Live Lounge where they covered Harry Styles’ “As It Was.”

The indie rockers have been out promoting their new album, WE, when they stopped at the BBC Live Lounge. While “As It Was” is a pretty distinctive Harry Styles bop, Arcade Fire add their own twist to it with ease. They may not have changed too much melodically, but instrumentally the song varies greatly, and frontman Win Butler’s vocals add a quintessential Arcade Fire flare.

On Arcade Fire’s rendition of the Harry’s House track, they give it a bouncy new wave energy. Lyrically, Butler delivers famous lines like, “Holdin’ me back/ Gravity’s holdin’ me back/ I want you to hold out the palm of your hand/ Why don’t we leave it at that?”

On the cover, Arcade Fire double the temp to give the track a more frantic edge.

In addition to “As It Was,” Arcade Fire performed live-in-studio renditions of “The Lightning I, II” and “Age Of Anxiety II (Rabbit Hole).” Watch those performances below.

Arcade Fire’s new record WE marks their sixth studio album to date.

The album is split into two sides: Side “I,” which is about “the fear and loneliness of isolation” and Side “WE” about “the joy and power of reconnection.”

“My grandmother read me a book when I was a little kid that had the word “WE” stamped into its cover in broken 1920s gold leaf,” Win Butler explains. “As my eyes grew heavy, in the bedroom my father slept in as a child, I wondered… What is “WE”? Who are “WE”?”
