The Beginningchromeo_old
Believe it or not but Dave 1 and P-Thugg are not the real names of the two men who make up the duo known as Chromeo. David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel met during the mid 90s while attending school at College Stanilas in Montreal, Quebec. Being childhood buddies from very different backgrounds the two have described themselves as “the only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture.” They were both around the age of 15 when Macklovitch joined Gemayel’s band and after jamming together for a while, the two ventured into production starting with Hip Hop tracks. While all this was happening, Macklovitch was working at a record store with fellow Montreal musician Tiga. He asked Dave 1 to work on a project for his label, Turbo. Dave 1 brought P-Thugg back into the mix and they signed as Chromeo.

cromeo thugChromeo’s debut album She’s in Control was released in 2004, with Critics comparing their style and sound to that of Hall & Oates. Album cut “Needy Girl” became a club anthem, hitting the speakers in dance halls worldwide. Not very long after She’s in Control dropped, Chromeo released Un Jolie Mix Pour Toi (which translates to “A Pretty Mix For You” in english). It was an assortment of dance tracks they shared through Eskimo Belgium Records. After a big tour supporting Bloc Party, Chromeo didn’t release new music for quite some time. It was in 2007 that the world would receive the duo’s sophomore record Fancy Footwork. The album continued to establish Chromeo as an act on the rise with singles “Fancy Footwork” and “Tenderoni”.

After countless shows in support of Fancy Footwork, it was time to get back into the studio and make a new album. Business Casual was released on September 13th, 2010 to a generous amount of hype. Critics and fans were pleased with the 80s feel and energy the LP brought. The album’s success managed to get the pair performing on the late night scene, playing on both Letterman and Conan. Last September Dave 1 and P-Thugg announced their latest record, White Women, will be released on May 12th this year. You can watch the two rip through the new record at the Danforth Music Hall this friday.
