Bands Who Hate Their Own Songs

Royals, Creep, Ice Ice Baby, and more

Sometimes people fall out of love. The same goes for artists and their songs. Here are 10 songs that are hated by their creators.

LORDE – “ROYALS”

Lorde’s listened to many creative covers of “Royals” online and says it made her realize her version sounds horrible. She claims it sounds like the ringtone from a 2006 Nokia and none of the melodies are cool or good.

THE SMITHS – “WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?”?

Morrissey is known for being an amazing lyricist and that might be the reason he doesn’t like this song. He has called it his least favorite Smiths song because the lyrics are boring and he claims he didn’t like it the day after the record was pressed.

OASIS – “WONDERWALL”

Liam Gallagher – “I can’t fucking stand that fucking song. Every time I have to sing it I want to gag.”

DAN MANGAN – “ROBOTS”

Dan Mangan doesn’t hate this song, but he went in a new direction on his latest album Club Meds because he thinks it’s important to keep growing. He thinks “Robots” is an amazing song but he doesn’t want it to define him. He says it was sort of a ridiculous song that came together in his head.

BEASTIE BOYS – “FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT (TO PARTY)”

Beastie Boys wrote this song to make fun of meat heads and all the anthems in rock music at the time. When they realized their fans had become what they were making fun of, they stopped performing it live in 1987.

NEIL YOUNG – “HEART OF GOLD”

Neil Young doesn’t necessarily hate this song but because of its commercial success, he says it put him in the middle of the road and that was boring for him. It was his first and only #1 single in the US.

SIMPLE MINDS – “(DON’T YOU) FORGET ABOUT ME”

This song wasn’t even written by Simple Minds and was turned down by a few musicians including Billy Idol before Simple Minds also declined it. Their label talked them into recording it and it became huge because of The Breakfast Club. They didn’t put it on an album until they released a greatest hits seven years later.

RADIOHEAD – “CREEP”

Before Radiohead released a string of hugely influential and commercially successful albums, most of the world knew their name because of this song. Thom Yorke hates this song so bad they wouldn’t play it live for years and told fans to “fuck off” when they requested it be played.

RADIOHEAD – “HIGH AND DRY”

Radiohead also don’t like “High and Dry”! They wrote it during the sessions for their debut album but didn’t include it because they thought it sounded like a Rod Stewart song. The track made it onto their sophomore, but they haven’t played it live since 1998.

VANILLA ICE – “ICE ICE BABY”

The only reason Vanilla Ice has had obnoxious reality TV shows including one called Vanilla Ice Goes Amish is because of this song. That’s why I can’t believe he has the audacity to publicly dismiss it. The rumour is he visited MTV in 1999 and smashed the master copy of the music video so no one could play it anymore. Lately he’s been randomly performing it live, probably to create buzz for his reality TV shows.
