Toronto-based outfit Beams are set to release their sophomore effort Teach Me To Love on February 23. Today, Indie88 is please to premiere the first single, “You Are An Ocean,” from the band’s forthcoming release. The record came together during a time that saw singer/co-front woman Anna Mernieks go down “a mental spiral that wreaked havoc on her personal and artistic life.”
“Inspired by the fact that all matter is an ocean of molecules, ‘You Are an Ocean’ reflects on this idea that we are all connected,” Mernieks told Indie88 via email. “In the songs narrative, a picture is painted of a person’s solitary, repetitive world, but as the song progresses the walls fall away and the myth of apartness is disproved. It’s a call for courage and honesty: we are all in this together. I wrote it for anyone that I’ve known who wants to escape society and become a hermit – including me.”

With Teach Me To Love, Beams enlisted Ian Gomes (Hooded Fang, Odonis, Odonis), and Peter J. Moore (Neko Case, Cowboy Junkies) to helm production duties. The band is planning a tour to Texas and back to coincide with the arrival of their new record.
