Best Music of 2013: Hip Hop Edition

It's been a great year for hip hop fans

2013 had too much good music to cover in one post so I’m dividing it by genre. First up are my top 3 hip hop releases, and what a crazy year it’s been. I can’t think of a year in recent history with this much good rap, so if you’re a hip hop fan read on. If not, no biggie, just wait until next week when I’ll be covering Indie Rock/Pop.

There are some explicit lyrics here, just a heads up.

Dynasty- 360 Waves

Durag Dynasty is 3 MC’s from California and they quietly dropped one of the best albums of the year in March. This record is near perfect and Alchemist’s beats are so far ahead of other producers in the game right now that he’s basically doing victory laps around them. The record is pretty slept on but I predict it will end up on many year end lists ensuring a follow up.

Roc Marciano- The Pimpire Strikes Back

Roc is from Hempstead, NY and pretty much everything he’s doing lately is years ahead of his peers. As Big L once said he’s “so ahead of his time that his parents haven’t met yet”. This was actually a free mixtape but with production by Alchemist, Evidence and Lord Finesse I think it’s safe to call this an album. Did I mention it’s available as a free download? Amazing stuff.

Ka- The Night’s Gambit

Ka is a true renaissance man in the sense that he handles all of his own production, directs his own videos and even set up shop on a street corner in Brooklyn to sell vinyl copies of this record to fans. This is thoughtful, introspective grown man rap. This is total outsider stuff and I can’t wait to hear what he does next.

Honourable Mention:

Prodigy and Alchemist- Albert Einstein
Run The Jewels- s/t
