While it’s been a slower week for new tunes, the music that has been released has been outstanding.
We’ve gotten fresh cuts from Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon’s Big Red Machine, Green Day side project The Network, Jade Bird, James Vincent McMorrow, and Austra.
Check out this week’s Best New Indie below.
Big Red Machine – “Wise Up”
The National’s Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon have shared a cover of Aimee Mann’s “Wise Up” as Big Red Machine for the Eaux Claires Festival voting initiative “For Wisconsin.” The track sees Dessner taking the lead, with layers of electronic drums, brass, guitars, and Vernon’s backing vocals. Additionally, their cover features guests like Mina Tindle, Jon Low, Ben Lanz, and fellow the National members Bryce Dessner, Bryan Devendorf, and Scott Devendorf.
The Network – “We Told You So”
Green Day side project The Network have been teasing the release of Money Money 2020 Part II, and today they’ve shared a new track called “We Told You So.” Billie Joe Armstrong and co. have always denied being the musicians behind The Network, who’s first and only album Money Money 2020 was released in 2003. Now, the mysterious band has been teasing their return with Money Money 2020 Part II.
Jade Bird – “Headstart”
Jade Bird has made her return with her first new single of 2020, “Headstart.” “‘Headstart’ came out of a trip I made to upstate New York at the beginning of the year,” Bird explains. “It’s quite a light-hearted song, about liking someone who just can’t see the signs, and releasing it feels like community to me, and it makes me want to sing again.”
James Vincent McMorrow – “Gone”
Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow has made his return with a new single called “Gone.” The new track is about “the disintegration of relationships.” “In my case, the disintegration of my relationship with myself,” McMorrow explains. “No song or lyric I’ve ever written has come as close to this one at capturing how I feel about life, how I hear it, my fear of it, my obsession with it, my belligerent belief that I can control it, my quiet acknowledgment in the middle of the night that I will never control a single thing. And there’s nothing wrong with any of it.”
Austra – “Risk It (Planningtorock Remix)”
After sharing a slew of remixes, Austra is back with a visualizer for a new Planningtorock remix of “Risk It.” “Planningtorock is a queer icon,” Austra’s Katie Austra Stelmanis explains. “Their music feels very good and very risky and their lyrical description of the queer trans experience is entirely unique. I’m thrilled to have them work on this second remix for Austra.”
