Best New Indie: 6 songs you need to hear this week

Required Weekly Listening

In a week filled with loss, heartache, and political precariousness, it’s always important to remember that there’s always new music.

New efforts to grace our ears this week include music from The xx, Cloud Nothings, and Childish Gambino. Here are six songs you need to sample as we head into the weekend.

The xx – “On Hold”

It’s been a good week for fans of The xx. The London-based band dropped a single from their upcoming record I See You and they landed a date with Saturday Night Live.

Childish Gambino – “Me and Your Mama”

Donald Glover ended months of speculation around new music from Childish Gambino by delivering a look at the artwork for …Awaken, My Love! and the album’s first single “Me and Your Mama”.

Cloud Nothings – “Modern Act”

Cleveland indie rockers the Cloud Nothings released a video for “Modern Act” from the fifth record Life Without Sound.

LIV – “Dream Awake”

Swedish supergroup LIV features Lykke Li, producer Jeff Bhasker, Andrew Wyatt and Pontus Winnberg from Miike Snow, and Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John. The group’s new dream pop release is aptly titled “Dream Awake”.

Dufferin Starship – “I Would Trade Anything For Love”

Dufferin Starship is the band that formed on Bunz Trading Zone and their first single “I Would Trade Anything For Love” is one of our favourite new songs.

The Men – “Dreamer”

The Men’s new record Devil Music was released Friday and it’s more of the explosive, cymbal-crashing, erratic noise-punk we’ve come to expect form the Brooklyn quartet.
