Best New Indie: 7 songs you need to discover this week

Fresh cuts from The National, Tim Baker, Billie Eilish, and more!

Tons of fresh cuts have been released this week with amazing new tracks from indie icons like The National, Billie Eilish, St. Vincent, and a young Dave Grohl in his raucous punk band Mission Impossible.

There are also some great new tunes from outstanding musicians making a comeback like Perfume Genius and Hey Rosetta!’s Tim Baker. Check out these 7 new tracks you need to take a listen to this week below.

The National – “Save The Bird”

The National have just shared a cover of the Thanksgiving song “Save The Bird” from Bob’s Burgers, accompanied by an animated video of the indie rock legends. The video is comical in the typical Bob’s Burgers style animation as The National plays the track in their traditional beautifully morose nature.

Tim Baker – “Spirit”

Former Hey Rosetta! frontman Tim Baker has just shared a new track called “Spirit,” which is part of a handful of songs he recorded during his travels across Canada. The song comes paired with a live performance filmed in Quidi Vidi, Newfoundland & Labrador. “Spirit is about just about being a musician in St. John’s,” Baker explains in a statement. “It’s funny that I had to move away to write that song.”

Mission Impossible – “Now I’m Alone”

The soundtrack for the 2014 documentary Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, D.C. is about to be released, and it takes a selection of rare tunes from some of the city’s most underrated heroes. One song on the record, “Now I’m Alone,” is by a band called Mission Impossible, which features a young Dave Grohl on the drums.

Lost Cousins – “Trails”

Lost Cousins have just released a beautiful new ballad called “Trails” off of their upcoming debut album In Scenery, which is set for release on February 1st. “Trails” explores the feeling of being lost and confused in a familiar scenario. The track feels as though it gets right into your bones with their powerful, driven melodies and endearing, slightly electronic vocals.

St. Vincent – “Perfect Day” (Lou Reed Cover)

St. Vincent took to the stage at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music this week to perform her MASSEDUCTION rework, MassEducation, with Thomas Bartlett accompanying on the piano. During the show, she covered Reed’s hit 1972 track “Perfect Day” for a dark, yet endearing rendition of the eerily monotonous tune.

Billie Eilish – “Come Out And Play”

Billie Eilish has just released a brand new single called “come out and play” for a heartwarming video for Apple’s “Share Your Gifts” campaign. The track, which premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show yesterday, soundtracks a heartwarming video from Apple for the Christmas season that follows a shy writer who is scared to share her gift.

Perfume Genius – “Not For Me”

After sharing a rework of “Alan” with streaming proceeds going towards Immigration Equality, Perfume Genius has released a heartbreaking new track called “Not For Me.” Frontman Mike Hadreas sings about feeling unworthy of love on the dark, booming new tune as he sings “I’ve never known love or been shown love, you’ll see.” The pounding drum and whirlwind vocals drive the eerie track and make you feel like you’re stuck in a bizarre loop.
