Best New Indie: 7 songs you need to discover this week

New tunes from Japanese Breakfast, Hop Along, Father John Misty, and more!

New year, new tunes.

Although it wasn’t a heavy start for new music in 2019, there have been some rad cuts this week from indie artists like Japanese Breakfast, Black Pistol Fire, The Darcys, Screaming Females, and Father John Misty.

Check out the best new indie tracks from this week below.

Father John Misty – Untitled New Track

Father John Misty’s musical silence may be ending, as Josh Tillman has started teasing new songs at live performances. Recently, Tillman performed a new track at his star-studded benefit show, which he hosted to raise money for victims of the California wildfires. When Tillman took to the stage, he played a new track on an acoustic guitar and although he didn’t say its title, the song frequently repeats the phrase “all God’s country” in the chorus.

Black Pistol Fire – “Level”

Toronto-bred garage rock duo Black Pistol Fire have shared a new song titled “Level,” which arrives ahead of several American tour dates. It appears more dates and perhaps more new music could be on the way from the Austin, Texas-based outfit.

The Darcys – “Ocean Eyes (Billie Eilish cover)”

Local art-rock duo The Darcys have just released a cover of Billie Eilish’s hit 2017 track, “Ocean Eyes.” The stripped-back, groovy rendition revolves around a simple acoustic guitar line alongside The Darcys’ trademark smooth, raspy vocal melodies. “When Jason first played me ‘Ocean Eyes,’ I remember the line ‘I’ve never fallen from quite this high’ really got to me,” band member Wes Marskell wrote on Facebook.

Japanese Breakfast – “Run Away With Me (Carly Rae Jepsen cover)”

Japanese Breakfast wrapped up 2018 with a homecoming concert in Philadelphia, where she performed Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Run Away With Me.” Frontwoman Michelle Zauner was joined by a group of friends on stage as they performed the pop, sax-heavy track. The sweet, upbeat rendition is rounded out with backing vocals from Zauner’s pals as she floats along the main vocal melodies of the hit pop tune and jumps around on stage.

Old Sea Brigade – “Sinkhole”

Nashville-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ben Cramer, also known as Old Sea Brigade, released his debut full-length album this morning, featuring the standout opening track “Sinkhole.” The ambient indie tune is cinematic and provocative, with dreamy instrumentals that rival the likes of Benjamin Francis Leftwich.

Screaming Females – “Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana cover)”

American indie rock trio Screaming Females have kicked of 2019 by covering the iconic Nirvana tracks, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Breed.” At their New Year’s Eve show at New York’s Beat Kitchen, Screaming Females launched into “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for an ambitious, heavy cover of the legendary tune.

Hop Along – “True Love Will Find You In The End (Daniel Johnston cover)”

During the encores of their last two shows of 2018, Hop Along covered Daniel Johnston’s iconic track “True Love Will Find You In The End.” The band transformed the intimate, sparing acoustics of the original tune into an upbeat, raucous rendition as vocalist Frances Quinlan really leans into the track with her raspy melodies. The high-energy track feels empowering and is sure to have you bopping along with its steady beat and powerful guitar lines.
