Best New Indie: 9 Songs You Need To Discover This Week

Required Weekly Listening

There’s so much new music to listen to, and so little time.

Today’s new music friday is a busy one, with new albums from The Beaches, Barr Brothers, Stars, Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett, The Elwins, Beck and St. Vincent to name a few. So while you fill your iPods (do people still use those?) with any or all of these great records, make sure you keep some room for the best new indie tracks of the week.

Here’s our weekly roundup of the best new indie:

Area Resident — “Riverside”

Ottawa-based indie artist Doug Hempstead, a.k.a. Area Resident, recorded material for his new record Delano in between split shifts as a traffic reporter at CBC. Area Resident’s sophomore record arrives next month.

Porches — “Country”

Porches a.k.a. Aaron Maine returns with new song “Country.” It’s the first taste of what’s to come from the follow-up to his 2016 breakthrough record Pool.

Bishop Briggs — “Dream”

Indie-pop act Bishop Briggs has been impressing audiences with her bold, impassioned voice for the past year. Briggs put out her self-titled debut EP earlier this year, recorded a collaborating with indie mainstays Cold War Kids and is now sharing a new hard-hitting single “Dream.”

Beaches — “Gold”

The Beaches dropped their debut record Late Show today and it’s a total doozy. Earlier this week they shared their latest single, “Gold” and an accompanying music video. Check it out above.

Skye Wallace — “Scarlet Fever”

“Scarlet Fever” is the first new song from Skye Wallace since her last album Something Wicked. It’s a love story set in the Yukon, setting the tone for her follow-up, which is scheduled to arrive in late 2018.

Dizzy — “Stars and Moons”

Lush, dizzying indie dream pop from the aptly named Toronto group Dizzy. The four piece are currently on a Canadian tour with Tei Shi, and took time to share “Stars and Moons.”

Nick Murphy — “Medication”

Earlier this year Nick Murphy released his first EP (Missing Link) as Nick Murphy after dropping the moniker Chet Faker. “Medication” is the newest single from Murphy and will hopefully lead up to another EP or album.

Noel Gallagher — “Holy Mountain”

Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds shared the latest from their upcoming album Who Built The Moon?, coming November 24th. Listen to “Holy Mountain” above.

Hamilton Leithauser ft. Angel Olsen — “Heartstruck (Wild Hunger)”
