The music community is reeling from the untimely loss of Chris Cornell this week, the Soundgarden and Audioslave singer who helped pave the way for music greats like Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

While we grieve, we look to the current and future generations of artists who continue to made bold new steps in independent, alternative and pop music. Take a look our favourite new indie tracks that were released this week:

Grizzly Bear – “Mourning Sound”

Grizzly Bear shared a second new single today, “Mourning Sound,” that has a more up-beat rhythm than we’re used to with the band, as well a heavier reliance on synth effects — though with the same Grizzly Bear flare. Their new album Painted Ruins is set to release August 18th.

The Junction – “Changes”

Returning to the scene early last year after a four-year hiatus, The Junction have been ramping up the excitement for their next endeavor, their-long awaited fourth studio album City Nights. This week, they premiered “Changes,” a 80s-inspired groove that could be mistaken for a slowed down disco hit.


Beach House – “Chariot”

Beach House announced plans to release B-Sides and Rarities this week, sharing this previously unreleased slow burner “Chariot”.

Courtney Barnett – “How To Boil an Egg”

Courtney Barnett has shared a previously unreleased song from her early days titled “How To Boil An Egg” that she wrote when she was 21. The announcement came with notice from Barnett that she’s begun work on a follow-up to 2015’s Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.

Broken Social Scene – “Hug of Thunder”

Broken Social Scene have shared the title track from their upcoming release Hug of Thunder, which arrives July 7 via Arts & Crafts. The new cut features Feist on lead vocals, so you can go ahead and feel like an angsty kid again.

RAC – “I Still Wanna Know” ft. Rivers Cuomo

This collaborative track “I Still Wanna Know” is an infectiously danceable tune with a kick-ass guitar solo near the end that features Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo. Take a listen before it arrives with he rest of his forthcoming album EGO, due July 14th.


Phoenix – “Ti Amo”

A different pace from French disco-pop group Phoenix, the title track from their upcoming album Ti Amo arrived this week before it is released June 9th.
