Big Red Machine deliver staggering performance of ‘Phoenix,’ debut ‘New Auburn’ on ‘Colbert’

Last night (August 10) Big Red Machine – the joint project of The National’s Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon – took to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform their recent single “Phoenix”.

Featuring Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes and Anaïs Mitchell, the group gave an incredibly beautiful live version of the ethereal tune. In addition, the artists debuted a brand new song “New Auburn”.

Set on a blue-lit stage, the three artists were backed by an array of talent including a drummer, guitarists, and a lively horns section. Visuals that have been released via social media with each single played on screens in the background, setting the entire atmosphere.

Big Red Machine’s forthcoming album is the follow up to their 2018 self-titled debut. How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? arrives August 27th via Jagjaguwar. Very much a collaborative project, the LP also features artists such as Taylor Swift, Sharon Van Etten and more.

They’ve released several singles already including “Mimi”, “Renegade”, “The Ghost of Cincinnati” and “Latter Days”.
