Bright Eyes have recruited Phoebe Bridgers for a cover of Elliott Smith’s “St Ides Heaven.”
The cover comes from Bright Eyes’ forthcoming Letting Off The Happiness: A Companion. That album is part of the band’s upcoming Companion series releases. The first three of those albums will be out on May 27th via Dead Oceans. Now, Bright Eyes and Bridgers have previewed the collection with their own brooding rendition of Elliott Smith’s “St Ides Heaven.”
The cover sees the musicians turning the track into a rock-driven anthem. On Bright Eyes and Bridgers’ version of “St Ides Heaven,” they swap out Smith’s acoustic riffs for raw, noisy electric guitar-driven melodies.

Out this year on Dead Oceans, the band will be reissuing their first three albums. On May 27th, we’ll get reissues of A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995-1997, Letting Off The Happiness, and Fevers and Mirrors. These three releases come as part of an even larger reissue project, which will see Bright Eyes reissuing all nine studio albums. Alongside the reissues, the band will release a Companion EP featuring five new recordings of songs on the original release and a cover from an artist they were inspired by at the time of recording.
In addition to “St Ides Heaven,” Bright Eyes have previewed the Companion series releases with “Falling Out of Love At This Volume,” “Contrast And Compare (feat. Waxahatchee),” and “Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh (feat. Phoebe Bridgers).”
