Brittany Howard features on the new Nate Smith single ‘Fly (For Mike)’

Jazz drummer Nate Smith has shared a new song called “Fly (For Mike),” which features none other than Brittany Howard.

Nate Smith brought his distinct percussive sound to Howard’s 2019 album, Jaime. Now, Howard features on the track from Smith’s forthcoming album, Kinfolk 2: See the Birds. The album is out on September 17th, and this single is the perfect preview of the album. “Fly (For Mike)” is a soft tune with a special dedication.

“Every time I fly, I think of my late father, to whom this song is dedicated,” Nate Smith explains. “When I wrote it, I wanted the music to evoke a feeling of freedom from suffering. I’m so grateful that Brittany wrote such gorgeous lyrics, and sang them so beautifully. It’s my hope that this song will bring comfort to anyone who has experienced loss, along with the reassurance that their loved ones are no longer suffering.”

“It is no secret that I consider Nate to be one of the best drummers on Earth,” Howard adds. “I feel so lucky to share the stage with him and have him in my band. I was honored to be asked to co-write and sing a song on his new album. It took on extra special meaning when I learned it was about his late father who I know was such an important figure in his life. So many folks have experienced loss over this past year and a half and I hope this song in some way helps those struggling right now get through these challenging times.”

Brittany Howard’s upcoming remix album

Aside from her collaboration with Nate Smith, Howard has been quite busy. She’s readying a star-studded remix album with tracks from her 2019 solo record, Jaime. It’s out on July 23rd via ATO.

The forthcoming collection is set to feature contributions from Childish Gambino, Michael Kiwanuka, and a collaboration between 9th Wonder and Comomon. So far, Howard has already released EARTHGANG’s version of Goat Head” and Bon Iver’s remix of “Short And Sweet.” She also recently shared Little Dragon’s cinematic version of “Presence” and BADBADNOTGOOD’s dreamy, swayable remix of “Tomorrow.”
