CHVRCHES share cover of Avril Lavigne’s ‘I’m With You’

Scottish electropop trio CHVRCHES have shared a cover of Avril Lavigne’s “I’m With You.”

The cover was recorded for Apple Music‘s Home Sessions series. “‘I’m With You is a classic banger ballad of our times,” she says of the cover. Alongside the brooding cover of Lavigne’s 2002 single, they also reworked “California.” CHVRCHES’ take on “California” is a stripped down version, as frontwoman Lauren Mayberry sings of lockdown isolation.

“It helped put a lot of things into perspective,” Mayberry continues. “The band is normally an amazing but chaotic part of our lives. Working on Screen Violence became a really comforting and grounding thing to do because the band was one of the only things that provided us with some sense of normalcy.”

“Lockdown provided a much-needed reset and helped us think about where we were going and what we really want to say in our music,” Mayberry adds. “Especially lyrically, the isolation of lockdown was almost an aha moment in terms of choosing how I wanted to move forwards, and I think I’ll hold on to that. ‘California’ feels like a good illustration of what Screen Violence is about, sonically and lyrically, and we thought it would be fun to reinterpret it in an acoustic format.”

More CHVRCHES Covers:

CHVRCHES are no stranger to covers. Earlier this month, they shared a cover of the legendary The Lost Boys theme music, “Cry Little Sister.” The new version of the Gerard McMann track was recorded for a new Netflix film, Nightbooks.

Discussing the cover, CHVRCHES gushed:

“We were so excited to work on this project as we are big fans of everyone involved. Cinema — horror in particular — has always been a big part of CHVRCHES behind the scenes. We have talked about covering ‘Cry Little Sister’ for years and this seemed like the perfect moment to do it.”
